Abstract This chapter chronologically explores the strategic trend of SCS situation from 1990 to 2020 over four phases: 1990–2002, 2003–2012, 2013–2016, and 2017–2020. The main purpose this is understand timing changes in subregional power configuration South China Sea a more nuanced way. Of course, environmental are not sole determinant institutional strategy shifts among regional security institutions. However, without understanding trends context China’s increasing military economic capabilities, it becomes difficult clarify responses or non-responses ASEAN ASEAN-led institutions changing environment.
